Lakewood Brewing is one of the first North Texas breweries to release their version of the Black Is Beautiful collaboration beer next Friday, July 17.
The genesis of Black Is Beautiful (https://blackisbeautiful.beer/) came from fellow Texas craft brewery Weathered Souls Brewing. Their head brewer Marcus Baskerville came up with the idea to create a multi-brewery collaboration by publishing the recipe to Black Is Beautiful stout. Any brewery can use and make their own version, so long as the proceeds bring awareness to equality issues. So far almost 1,000 breweries in 50 states and 19 countries are participating.
“When we heard about the Black Is Beautiful project, we jumped on it immediately,” said Wim Bens, President and Founder of Lakewood Brewing. “This beer fits right in with our family–owned brewery’s core values of Family, Creativity, Inclusiveness and Community Spirit. It wasn’t a question of if we participate, it was more about how fast can we do this.”
Lakewood immediately got to brewing for a Taproom-only release. The base stout recipe for a 10% American stout was given a Lakewood Brewing Co. twist with the addition of hazelnuts. “Our brewery is famous for our stouts, so this beer was right in our wheelhouse. We wanted to make our own little addition so we thought hazelnut would pair really well with the recipe Marcus shared.”
Proceeds from the sale of the beer at Lakewood will go to benefit the NAACP chapter of Dallas.
