Brewer’s Alley, the historic anchor of downtown Frederick, Maryland and the County’s original and largest brewpub, are celebrating the release of its limited-edition 30th Anniversary American Pale Ale. The milestone-marking beer pays tribute to the brewpub’s role as a pioneer in Maryland’s craft industry, a beloved community landmark, and a major catalyst in the revitalization of downtown Frederick.
Crafted as a true-to-style tribute to the classic American Pale Ale, the recipe relies entirely on 100% American-grown ingredients, balancing historic brewing traditions with premium raw materials. To mirror their own milestone, Brewer’s Alley procured 2-Row, Carapils, and Blonde Roasted Oats from Briess Malt, a fifth-generation, family-owned American maltster celebrating its own landmark 150th anniversary this year.
The pale ale features a vibrant, classic hop profile consisting of Bravo, Cascade, Mosaic, and Simcoe, all sourced directly from the Yakima Valley in Washington. Fermented with clean, crisp California Ale Yeast, the combination allows the character of the American malt and Pacific Northwest hops to take center stage.
The resulting beer is a 6% ABV classic pale ale that features bright hop aromas, subtle citrus notes, and a smooth, refreshing finish, making it an incredibly drinkable tribute to thirty years of local craft brewing. The commemorative American Pale Ale hit the market in 12oz cans featuring red, white and blue artwork – a nod to both the July release timing and the all-American ingredients inside.
“When we fired up the kettles in 1996, the craft beer landscape was uncharted territory. Our mission was simple: build a space where Frederick’s rich past and vibrant future could shake hands over a fresh pint,” said Phil Bowers, founder of Brewer’s Alley. “This American Pale Ale isn’t just a new recipe; it’s a liquid tribute to our history and the incredible purveyors like Briess Malt who have sustained American craft brewing for generations.”
Drawing inspiration and proof of concept from the craft beer explosion happening in states like Colorado and Washington in the early ‘90’s, founder Phil Bowers was instrumental in getting the necessary legislation implemented in Frederick. His efforts not only paved the way for Brewer’s Alley to open its doors, but also laid the groundwork for the future craft beverage boom across Frederick County.
Brewer’s Alley found its home in an iconic 1765 downtown landmark. Previously housing Frederick’s city hall, a bustling town market, a city jail, and a grand opera house, the building’s transformation into Brewer’s Alley proved that locally brewed beer, paired with stellar service and an innovative food menu, could drive social and economic revitalization. The brewpub’s success ultimately helped spark the modern rebirth of Frederick’s historic downtown district and restaurant scene.
Fast forward 30 years and Brewer’s Alley is permanently woven into the history of Frederick. Today, the business honors its heritage by acting as a modern public square, a place where historic preservation meets contemporary craft. But rather than resting on its laurels, current owner Greg Brown and the team behind the landmark brewpub are actively shaping its next era with a continuous evolution of its offerings.
“We didn’t invent craft beer, but we certainly built the foundation for it here in Frederick while also paving the way for craft beer in Maryland,” said Brown. “Thirty years of brewing is a tribute to our team’s obsession with quality and our community’s appetite for local flavor. Brewer’s Alley invites the community, alumni, and longtime patrons to celebrate this shared milestone at its official 30th Anniversary Gathering on Wednesday, July 29th from 4-6 p.m. The afternoon celebration will feature a complimentary buffet, exclusive giveaways, commemorative swag, and a tap list featuring the limited-edition 30th Anniversary American Pale Ale.
