Unique Business Strategies During COVID-19 Pandemic

Although most states are now in a day-by-day situation, breweries are having to be flexible with business strategies while complying with whatever laws are being enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since breweries are considered a “food producer” many have been able to stay open to make and sell its products. Those that package and distribute to off-premise retailers or others that have a kitchen and can make food have had more opportunities to stay open while some have announced closures until life returns to some state of normalness.

  • Colorado’s Bonfire Brewing designed a #dontgatherround shirt with a design that features the faces of each employee at the brewery. The proceeds will go directly back to the staff.
  • Thirsty Monk has reduced service to pick up and to-go orders only at its Biltmore Park and Downtown Asheville locations. In addition to Thirsty Monk Brewery cans and bottles and food, these locations will also honor and support fellow Asheville breweries with a mixed 4-pack of rotating Asheville beer from other breweries. “Over the years Thirsty Monk helped introduce many of our Asheville breweries to the community and we recognize they are also feeling the same pain we are now feeling,” said Thirsty Monk CEO Barry Bialik in a letter to staff.
  • The Empourium had to cancel its upcoming first anniversary in April, but the Denver-based facility extended its online #POURtrait challenge, with a final deadline for submissions to be announced later in spring. The brewery mural has been encouraging folks to share selfies or portraits in front of the brewery mural by Drew Button, tagging @dbuttonink and @empouriumbrew, and add #POURtrait for the chance to win free beer for a year. “[It’s] a colorful, fun addition to social media feeds in a time when we need color, fun, and beer the very most,” a brewery spokesperson said.
  • In California, Karl Strauss announced over the weekend it has added family meals and beer to-go. ”While we are complying with all governmental mandates, we are currently offering fresh meals To Go,” they wrote online. ”We have platters, proteins, salads, and sides — along with select Karl menu items — which are available for pickup at the list of locations below. Call us to place your order for pickup, or place your order for delivery through Doordash.”
  • Endo Brewing — part craft brewery, part bike shop in Lafayette, Colorado — is still offering bike repair appointments and beer-to-go of course.
  • Lone Tree Brewing still plans to release three new beers across Colorado via off-premise accounts, and through tasting room curbside pickup. These beers from a brewery that usually only produces Double IPA and IPA one-offs — Castle Rock Pale Ale, Kiwi Strawberry Blonde Ale, and the company’s brand new year-round IPA, Lone Tree IPA.
  • Westbound & Down Brewing cans just hit Colorado distribution via Culture Beverage, so the brewery decided to close its taproom and focus on filling shelves for the time being. Late last week, the brewery opened a to-go window where it was slinging craft coffee, breakfast burritos, and beer. ⁣⁣The brewery was offering a complimentary cup of craft coffee from Sweet Bloom Coffee with any gift card purchase.
