It’s no secret in some pockets of the craft beer industry that marginalization of women is still apparent. In looking to call attention to the issue and break down barriers, Revolution Brewing last year released a product to celebrate the women in the industry with “Spirit of Revolt,” an Imperial IPA.
The proceeds of sales of the draft-only release raised more than $20,000 for Connections for Abused Women and Their Children in Chicago and the brewery is stepping up the cause with a canned release of the brand this year with even more of a marketing push.
“We felt it was important to celebrate the role of women in brewing,” said Dre Lapsys the Brand Activation Lead for Revolution. “It’s no secret that women aren’t always given their due — people can treat women like they don’t know beer, understand how it’s brewed, or know how to taste.
”We love to show them how much knowledge and ability women in this industry have — and Revolution employs some of the most intelligent, dedicated women in craft beer.”
The beer’s time as a featured release will culminate with an art show at the Revolution Taproom on Friday, March 8, which is International Women’s Day. The event will feature a gallery display of work from local female artists.
”Spirit of Revolt is all about allowing women to grow and to find role models in the industry to help them reach whatever personal and professional paths they choose,” Lapsys said. “Women get things done.”
To help promote the endeavor, Revolution has had special Spirit of Revolt merch made in advance of the event.
”Our event will be a great celebration of local female artists and the creative spirit of Chicago’s women,” Lapsys said. ”Lincoln Hall and Schubas were also both amazing in stepping in right away and choosing to throw their own Spirit of Revolt events and contribute to CAWC.”
