Ideas to Maximize Your Outdoor Space

The beer garden area at Sonder Brewing has proven to be a big draw, said Haley Shutter, Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Cincinnati brewery.

“We are fortunate to be located on a six-acre parcel of land,” she told Brewer. The brewery’s beer garden has ample room for customers to hang out, with over 150 table seats available.  They also have a huge yard space for people to walk their dogs or throw a football or frisbee, Shutter added.

Since opening in 2018, Sonder has built out the space in phases.

“This has afforded us the opportunity to see how customers use the space, and how to improve it for them,” Shutter said.

One of the first additions was a large astroturf area that allows the brewery to have a consistent space for cornhole or other yard games. They’ve also installed infrared heaters on its patio roof to keep guests comfortable while they watch the outdoor TV.

On chilly nights, for an additional cozy addition to the outside space, Shutter said the staff sets up and maintains real-wood fire pits.

One addition from the summer of 2022 was Sonder installed an outdoor bar with 12 draft options.

“This allows our customers to hang out outside and have access to most of the brews and wine options available inside,” Shutter said. “Additionally, our team created a whimsical German-themed mural installation on the outdoor cooler as a fun backdrop to the beer garden and as a photo op.”

To accommodate even more guests, they can put up a large event tent on the property.  Shutter said the tent allows Sonder staff to host large groups for private or public events, along with providing additional seating for its regular taproom customer when it’s available.

The tent is heated in the cooler months and provides a large covered space for up to 150 additional people.

Sonder isn’t content though and Shutter said that in the future they hope to add more landscaping featuring more trees, and native plants, a walking path around the perimeter of the property, and additional recreation activities to encourage guests to hang out longer and more often.
