Recruiting the best fit for your cidery starts with a clear understanding of your company’s culture, values, and the specific needs of whatever role you are looking to attain.
For 2 Broads Cider, Maggie Przybylski tells Brewer that they find recruiting to be more of a personal matter. Either a regular to the San Luis Obispo, California taproom or being contacted by someone that wants to work there are the best ways to ensure the proper need can be met.
“There just has to be a spark of passion for our project to hire someone that will take care of our business as if it is theirs,” Przybylski said. “Since we are such a community-oriented business, this really helps.
“People who want to be part of and maintain this community are great team members.”
Focusing on aligning any candidates’ personalities coupled with the goals that align with your cidery’s ethos can ensure a stronger connection beyond technical skills.
But why is it important to foster a positive company culture to help members feel valued, motivated, and supported?
“Employees need to feel like it’s safe to ask questions so we can all do a good job working together,” Przybylski said.
Since 2017, the cidery has crafted small-batch ciders using local and heirloom apples from their Avila Valley orchard and select California growers, working at showcasing the diverse flavors of the fruit.
To find ideal candidates though, leveraging multiple channels such as industry-specific job boards, networking events, utilizing referrals, along with even making posts on social media can provide a well-rounded pool of applicants.

During interviews, creating a conversational atmosphere helps potential candidates feel comfortable and reveals their authentic selves. Looking to ask situational questions tied to real challenges in the role presented matter and it can evaluate someone’s problem-solving approach which will provide insights into their thought process and potential contributions.
Incorporating team-based discussions or practical assessments can also highlight how well a candidate fits into the team dynamic.
The goal is to look beyond resumes and uncover qualities that align with both the immediate and long-term goals of your organization.
“A happy, well-cared for employee will do good work, and add to the mood of the business,” Przybylski said.
