A social media challenge tied to a new specialty beer release has turned into a free beer day at 3 Sheeps Brewing after a Stranger Things actor responded directly to the brewery online.
3 Sheeps announced it will offer free pours of “Dill-ightful Derek,” a pickle pilsner inspired by the character Derek Turnbow from the fifth season of Stranger Things, on Saturday, Jan. 17, at its Sheboygan taproom. The free pours will begin at 11 a.m. and continue while supplies last, with one free pint per person.
The promotion stemmed from a post made by the brewery following the release of the beer. In the post, 3 Sheeps challenged fans to get Jake Connelly, the actor who portrays Derek Turnbow, or another cast member from the series to comment. The brewery said it would pour the beer free for a day if the challenge was met.
Connelly later commented on the post, writing, “This is awesome! Free beer for a day!!!” The brewery confirmed it would follow through on the offer.
“Every once in a while you get an idea that feels too fun not to try,” said Grant Pauly, founder and brewmaster of 3 Sheeps Brewing. “We figured if Wisconsin rallied hard enough to get a Stranger Things actor to comment on our post, the least we could do was make good on the promise. Jake came through, the fans came through, and now we get to pour free pickle beer.”
“Dill-ightful Derek” is a 5% ABV pickle pilsner available on draft and in 32-ounce crowlers at the taproom. The brewery said a limited number of crowlers featuring a special label will also be available while supplies last.
The beer takes its name from the character Derek Turnbow, who is introduced in Season 5 as a bully before becoming an ally to the show’s central characters. The brewery said the name and style were driven by the wordplay and its interest in creating unconventional offerings alongside its core beers.
3 Sheeps Brewing’s taproom is located at 1837 North Ave. in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
