At Pike Brewing, company culture has been a cornerstone since its inception. Drew Gillespie, the brewery’s former president and a quarter-century veteran at Pike, traces this ethos back to founders Charles and Rose Ann Finkel.

“From day one, it was about what’s good for the staff,” Gillespie said during a sit-down conversation before he announced his retirement from the company.

Long before employee benefits like health care were industry norms, Pike prioritized its people, Gillespie pointed out.

“These are not high-profit businesses,” he said, “but making choices that benefit employees over the company has been part of our ethos for a long time.”

This philosophy extends beyond internal operations to include a commitment to community and inclusivity.

Leslie Shore, Pike’s head brewer, highlighted the brewery’s long-standing welcoming environment.

“Even as a customer 15 years ago, this place never felt like a ‘boys’ club,’” she said. “Treating people like people — shocker of all shockers — works.”

Pike’s values are evident in their actions, from fundraisers for organizations like Planned Parenthood to programs fostering diversity in brewing. Gillespie recalled the decision to establish scholarships aimed at increasing diversity in the craft beer industry.

“If I invest in diverse talent now, 20 years from now, this industry can be less about the ‘bearded white man,’” he said.

The brewery’s dedication to inclusivity is also reflected in initiatives like the “Women in Beer” program, which has expanded its mission to champion broader diversity.

Shore believes these efforts resonate with staff and visitors alike: “Living your values creates pride for the team and builds a culture where everyone feels welcome,” she said.

At Pike, culture isn’t just a buzzword — it’s a lived legacy, rooted in respect, inclusivity, and a commitment to the community.
