New Realm’s Wooded Reserve series represents the true spirit of brewing exploration and harkens back to the original renaissance of beer spurred by the hardworking barrel makers: the coopers. Virtually every beer in the 1800s was barrel-aged, and it’s from this handmade heritage that their barrel-aged beers were born. Raise a glass to tomorrow, and to yesterday with New Realm’s two newest releases: Imperial Brown Ale Aged in Barbados Rum Barrels and Belgian-style Tripel Ale Aged in a blend of Rye, Bourbon, and Rum Barrels.
New Realm is rounding out their 2020-2021 Wooded Reserve Series with the final two releases, Volume 4 and Volume 5. The first of these barrel-aged releases is New Realm’s Imperial Brown Ale Aged in Barbados Rum Barrels for 12 months. Rum barrel-aging imparts notes of spice and oak in this beer. Drinkers can observe the dark brown pour and take in the rich notes of dried fruit, caramel, brown sugar, and chocolate. This barrel-aged ale has a warming sensation and a lingering sweetness in its finish.
Beauty is the balance between simplicity and complexity. The second release and final beer in the 2020-2021 Wooded Reserve Series is a traditional Belgian-style ale that was aged 6 months in three different barrels before finding a perfect blend. This barrel-aged Belgian-style Tripel Ale has a light orange pour, and notes of spice, oak, banana, pear, and subtle hints of honeysuckle.
“Most brewers prefer to age high ABV stouts or porters in barrels, to complement the richer flavors already present in the beer. When developing the concepts for each of these new releases in our Wooded Reserve series, we decided that two ales with a milder roast character would combine well with the flavors picked up from the barrels to find that perfect balance,” said Mitch Steele, Brewmaster & COO of New Realm Brewing Co. “They’ve aged beautifully and turned out fantastic; both are must-haves from this series.”
These spring releases will be available in New Realm’s Brewery Restaurant and to-go coolers beginning April 27th. New Realm Brewing will be releasing limited 500mL bottles and draft in distribution with independent package retailers in Georgia and Virginia.
