Allegheny Mountain Malt and Windy Bridges Brew LLC have announced that they will collaborate on producing a beer for the upcoming Barrel & Flow Fest. The two-time “#1 beer festival” in America according to US News voters will be held at The Stacks at 3 Crossings in Pittsburgh on Saturday, August 10.
Windy Bridges Brew owner and brewer Marcus Wyatt holds a Brewing Science Certificate from Point Park University’s Natural Sciences and Engineering department and has been involved in the industry since 2018. In addition to his full-time job at a Mars machine shop, Marcus served as an assistant brewer at Inner Groove Brewing in Verona and aspires to found a freestanding brewery, which will make him the first Black brewery owner in Pittsburgh and only the second in Pennsylvania.
“People of color are traditionally underrepresenting in the craft brewing industry,” Wyatt explains. “But we are moving away from being just consumers to becoming brewers, creating unique flavor palettes and recipes that are putting us on the map nationally.”
Moving into its third season of planting and harvesting, Allegheny Mountain Malt (a project of Food21) is made from barley that is sustainably grown by regional farmers and malted locally by CNC Malting Co. in Butler County.
“Market research shows that craft brewers and even larger breweries are eager to include more local ingredients in their beers,” said Vince Mangini, Food21 Value Center Manager and Allegheny Mountain Malt coordinator. “At the same time, local farmers are pursuing more sustainable farming practices, and barley is a perfect cover crop.”
Using Allegheny Mountain Malt, Windy Bridges will produce a margarita sour ale for Barrel & Flow in the style of a German gose beer (with added salt). In keeping with the “localness” of the collaboration, the brew will be christened “Gose Dahn E-Z.” Tickets for Barrel & Flow are selling quickly, so interested Pittsburghers are encouraged to purchase as soon as possible.
