Threes Brewing, the celebrated Brooklyn-based brewery known for its balanced and innovative approach to craft beer, is proud to announce the appointment of Josh Penney as Head Brewer at its Gowanus brewpub, effective immediately.
Penney brings with him an impressive track record, most recently serving as Head Brewer at the acclaimed Highland Park Brewery in Los Angeles. During his 5 ½ year tenure at HPB, he played a pivotal role in the brewery’s success, helping secure multiple prestigious awards including four gold medals at the 2024 Great American Beer Festival and the coveted “Brewery of the Year” title.
His appointment marks an exciting new chapter for Threes Brewing, which has established itself as a cornerstone of New York’s craft beer scene with distribution across more than 30 states. As the new production leader of the Gowanus-based brewpub — the innovation center of Threes Brewing — he will be involved in all facets of beer production, from planning and brewing to release. His responsibilities include developing new brands, reimagining existing recipes, and managing the production team with the goal of brewing New York City’s finest beer.
“We’ve long felt a spiritual connection with Highland Park Brewery, sharing a deeper philosophy about what craft beer can be,” says Matt Levy, director of production for Threes. “Having Josh join our team is a natural evolution of that relationship. His like-minded approach to brewing and commitment to community make this partnership feel predestined. He is a uniquely talented brewer with the awards to prove it, and also a fantastic human being. We have no doubt the combination of our brewing mindset with his will bring Threes’ beers to new heights.”
“Threes was a natural choice for me as their values perfectly align with what I believe in: respect for community, constant innovation, and inclusivity,” says Penney. “I’m excited to bring my West Coast experience to Brooklyn and contribute to Threes’ continued evolution.”
A graduate of the UC Davis Master Brewer’s Program, Penney’s journey in craft beer also includes significant roles at Golden Road and Beachwood Brewing. He is originally from the East Coast. He and his wife, Meg, live in Brooklyn.
