San Diego Brewers Guild, a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization that promotes local small businesses and entrepreneurs of craft beer, has launched The Capital of Craft™ Podcast. Episodes are released every other Wednesday, and they are hosted by Brewers Guild Executive Director Erik Fowler and Beer Media Co.’s Jeff Fox.
Listeners can find the podcast on the Brewers Guild’s YouTube page, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and more. Episodes are roughly 30 minutes in length. The topics for the month of March:
March 6 – Meet the 2024 Guild President Jake Nunes
Nunes has more than 20 years of experience in the local craft beer industry and is a Certified Cicerone®, a certification for skilled beer professionals that is often referred to as the equivalent for sommeliers of wine. Nunes is the Director of Hospitality Modern Times Beer, and he has also worked for Burgeon Beer Company, Societe Brewing Company, North Park Beer Co., Ballast Point, and Stone Brewing during his career.
March 20 – Hop Research in San Diego
Arun Sethuraman, Ph.D. (Associate Professor, Department of Biology at San Diego State University) discusses insights from a semester-long experiment conducted in a common-garden greenhouse setting. Dr. Sethuraman’s students delved into cultivar diversity, nurturing 10 replicates each of five U.S.-based (Brewer’s Gold, Columbus, Comet, Neomexicanus, Zeus) and five non-U.S. (Hallertauer, Saaz, Sorachi Ace, Southern Cross, Fuggle) cultivars under identical conditions.
“There are so many stories to tell from this great San Diego industry,” Fowler said. “It’s often said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but I would say a thousand words are also worth a thousand words. We hope both industry professionals and craft beer enthusiasts will tune in and listen to all the great insight we’re going to provide.”
San Diego County is known as The Capital of Craft™, a moniker that was trademarked in 2015. San Diego has the most craft brewery locations among all counties in the United States with more than 150. The Brewers Guild was founded in 1997 with 15 breweries.
Fowler was named the Brewers Guild’s Executive Director last summer. He had spent the previous nine years as Head of Education & Craft Hospitality at White Labs Brewing Co. and White Labs, a yeast wholesaler with a team of biochemists that explore new ways to advance brewing. The Ramona native also served as a Director on the Brewers Guild Board of Directors for a year and half prior to becoming Executive Director. He is a Certified Cicerone®.
