Rohrbach Brewing Company, Rochester’s first and one of the nation’s pioneering craft breweries, today announced a transition in ownership to a new group led by long-time company leader Joel Will, and his brother Nathan Will, both natives of nearby Brockport, NY.
The transition marks a next-generation chapter for the brewery while maintaining the traditions, team, and community focus that have defined Rohrbach’s for more than three decades. Founded in 1991 by John Urlaub and Patty Yahn-Urlaub, Rohrbach Brewing Company has grown into one of Western New York’s most respected craft brewers, known for its commitment to quality, innovation, and deep ties to the Rochester community.
The company operates two locations in the region, including the Rohrbach Brewpub, opened in 1995, and the production brewery and Beer Hall in the city’s Market District, which opened in 2008.
Today, Rohrbach’s employs more than 85 team members and distributes its beers throughout the region through longstanding wholesale and retail partnerships.
Joel Will, who will assume the role of President & Chief Operating Officer, began his journey at Rohrbach’s at the Buffalo Road brewpub, where he met his wife, Jessica, and built a career spanning nearly two decades within the organization. Over the years, he has played an integral role in shaping the company’s operational culture and leadership, most recently overseeing day-to-day operations across the business. His appointment ensures continuity for employees, customers, and partners as the brewery enters its next chapter.
Joining Joel Will in ownership is Nathan Will, who will serve as Chief Executive Officer, bringing more than three decades of leadership and executive experience in complex business operations in international energy, finance and real estate. Together, the new leadership team emphasized that Rohrbach’s identity, team, and commitment to quality will remain unchanged. The brewery will continue to operate its brewpub and Beer Hall as usual, with plans to build thoughtfully on the strong foundation established by its founders and long-standing partners.
“In the life cycle of every business, there comes a time to transition to a new generation of leaders like Joel and his leadership team, who can take the business to the next level,” said John Urlaub, co-founder of Rohrbach Brewing Company. “There’s not a better scenario for this transition. It’s been an honor working with our loyal partners, dedicated team members, and all the customers who have supported us throughout the years. Our business has a very bright future with this new leadership team, and I look forward to continuing to support Rohrbach’s moving forward.”
Joel Will, President & COO, added: “After 35 years of business, Rohrbach’s has become a special place for many in the Rochester Community. This is particularly true for me. I met my wife while working here, formed countless friendships, and found a passion for Craft Beer. I am beyond grateful to John and Patty for the years of mentorship that have led to this moment, and for the trust that they have placed in Nathan and me to carry on what they have built. Our focus is simple — honor what has made this brewery special, support our team, and continue serving Western New York with the same passion and quality that have defined Rohrbach’s from the beginning.”
Nathan Will, CEO, said: “Rohrbach has always represented the spirit of this region — community, craftsmanship, and pride of place. It’s a privilege to partner with Joel and the entire Rohrbach team to help carry forward the legacy that John and Patty built, while supporting the brewery’s next chapter in a way that stays true to its roots in the region where we were born and raised. We’re also excited about our acquisition of Young Lion, and look forward to carrying on one of the region’s most loved and respected brands within the Rohrbach Brewing portfolio.”
