Catawba Brewing brings back their popular winter Limited Release Hooligan Scotch Ale (8.0 percent ABV) on Thursday, December 14, at all locations. Brewed with six specialty grains, this Wee Heavy-style dark ale is a robust, full-bodied beer, with layers of caramel, toffee, chocolate, dark fruit, and light roast. Hooligan will be available in 6-pack 12oz cans throughout Catawba’s 5-state distribution area.
Catawba will host a competitive Chili Cook-Off event at their Asheville South Slope tasting room as part of the Hooligan release party, from 6:30-8pm. The public is invited to serve as guest judges. Chili is free but donations are encouraged, to be given to Asheville’s Downtown Welcome Table.
On Thursday, December 14, Catawba taps a Scottish-style Small Batch beer to accompany Hooligan, the new 60 Shilling Ale (3.2 percent ABV). The 60-shilling category indicates a light-bodied, sessionable ale, deep mahogany in color with notes of toasted nuts and toffee.
On Friday, December 15, Catawba returns their Barrel-Aged Hooligan (10.0 percent ABV). This 2016-vintage Scotch Ale has spent the past 12 months aging in Kentucky bourbon barrels, drawing complementary flavors of vanilla, oak, and bourbon. Also new this Friday is a Peach Grisette (4.9 percent ABV). Brewed in their Charlotte brewhouse, this Belgian-style session ale is Catawba’s first open-fermented beer to emerge from their new custom-made, glass-walled “Beer Aquarium” fermenters.
