Abita Brewing Company has announced it has hired Mitch Steele as Director of Brewing Operations, bringing one of the most influential figures in modern American brewing to lead product innovation and production across the company’s beverage portfolio.
Widely recognized as a pioneer of the modern IPA movement, Steele has helped define hop-forward brewing in the United States. He previously served as Brewmaster at Stone Brewing, where he played a key role in producing and scaling some of the most iconic IPA brands in the craft beer category. Over his career, Steele also held leadership roles at Anheuser-Busch and co-founded New Realm Brewing, bringing decades of experience across both large-scale and craft production environments.
“Mitch is one of the most respected brewers in the industry, and his impact on American craft beer is hard to overstate,” said Troy Ashley, President of Abita. “As we continue to grow into a multi-category beverage company, having someone of his caliber leading our brewing and production efforts is a major step forward – not just for our beers, but for the future of our entire portfolio.”
Steele’s addition comes at a pivotal time for Abita, as the company continues to evolve under the newly introduced Abita Beverage Group, expanding into ready-to-drink cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages and contract manufacturing partnerships alongside its established beer and soda portfolio.
In his role, Steele will focus on product development, process optimization and continuous quality improvement, working closely with Abita’s team to support innovation and consistency across both core and new products.
“Great beverages start with great process and great ingredients, regardless of category,” said Steele. “What makes Abita especially exciting is the culture behind it – from the people to the place. There’s something unique about brewing in Louisiana and I’m looking forward to building on that foundation and contributing to what Abita calls ‘Culture on Tap’.”
Known for his deep expertise in hops, recipe development and scaling production, Steele will play a key role in evolving Abita’s core beer lineup while supporting new styles and limited releases that reflect changing consumer preferences.
His experience across both craft and large-scale production will also support Abita’s continued growth as a beverage platform – helping strengthen processes and consistency across ready-to-drink, flavored malt beverages and future product development initiatives.
Steele’s addition reinforces Abita’s commitment to investing in top-tier talent as it enters its next phase of growth, combining 40 years of brewing heritage with a forward-looking approach to beverage innovation.
