SweetWater Brewing Co.’s brand new summer seasonal for 2018, “Tropical Lover” Berliner Weisse, has approachably tart characteristics and tropical fruit flavors with the crushable, effervescent qualities of a sessionable ale. A natural souring process provides a refreshing, medium tartness, with additions of mango, guava and passion fruit working together to provide a clean, crisp finish. The tropical fruit flavors and low alcohol content (4.5%) make this an easy-to-love summer fling.
“I developed this beer because selfishly I wanted something that is refreshing and low ABV, but also had interesting characteristics and delicious flavors,” says Nick Burgoyne, lead brewer for SweetWater’s Woodlands Project barrel aging facility. “Nick B,” who has brewed with SweetWater for 12 years, began developing his ideal Berliner Weisse while he was a shift brewer, and perfected it when he took over the barrel aging facility, which opened in January 2017. “When we put test batches on tap at the Woodlands and in our main taproom, people kept commenting on how drinkable and refreshing it was; they loved the tropical flavors. I imagine Tropical Lover will be a hit with folks hanging out on the water all summer, kicking back with a few daytime drinks.”
