Portside Releases New Can Offering: North Kolsch

On Thursday, April 6, Cleveland’s Portside Distillery & Brewery will release a new Kolsch style ale.

The beer was named as a nod to the North Coast, thusly called North Kolsch. Although the microbrewery has 14 constantly rotating tap handles that are offered in their pub as well as bars and restaurants around town, only two Portside beers are currently being canned and sold off premise. This is big news for Portside fans who don’t live close enough to the pub to merely stop in for a growler.

North Kolsch is a fairly straightforward German-style ale. One sip will reveal untold worlds of flavor and depth in a tidy, clean package. The beer starts with classic Pilsner-style malt to build a clean foundation, with hints of bread crust and unsalted crackers. Next comes a hit of imported honey malt, which lays over hints of floral, rich honey. Imported German Hallertau Mittelfruh hops amplify the floral aromas, and impart a calming herbal character in the finish. The beer is fermented with a classic German lager yeast, but at an elevated temperature, which helps to amplify the hints of tree fruit and flowers, while holding together this crisp, clean ale.

“The whole affair revolves around refreshment and conciseness of character; just enough to hold your interest, but not so intense that it dominates the conversation,” said Brewmaster, Vaughn Stewart. “We consider North Kolsch to be a classic session ale, perfect for outdoor excursions or just a chat over a pint or two. ”

The beer will be available exclusively in cans at the Pub at Portside starting April 6. It will be available on and off premise in local bars and restaurants and retailers such as Heinens, Whole Foods, and select Giant Eagles on April 10.
