Falls City Beer Continues Line Expansion with New Seasonal, “Red Rye” Lager

Rye isn’t just for whiskey anymore. The grain is a key ingredient in a new spicy ruby red beer from Falls City Beer, here just in time for chilly weather. Falls City Beer’s latest bottled seasonal, Red Rye Lager, will hit shelves this week and is pouring on draft at Louisville bars and restaurants.

The well-balanced, malty brew features toasty Munich and sweet caramel malts, balanced with the spiciness of rye and caraway. Further depth is added through Cascade, Willamette and Crystal hops. It’s a sessionable lager, with an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4.5 percent.

“Red Rye Lager is a unique style of beer that we developed that’s a perfect cold-weather beer without being overly spiced or heavy,” said Dylan Greenwood, Master Brewer for Falls City Beer. “Our goal was to use spice to balance the sweetness of the malt. Caraway is often used as a spice in breads, particularly rye bread, so the combination of caraway and rye is a time-tested flavor combination that translated well into a beer.”

While rye has been used by distillers for decades, it has become more popular with craft brewers too in recent years.

Red Rye Lager follows the brewery’s summer seasonal as part of Falls City’s new rotating seasonal series. Falls City launched its seasonal series in March and added Kentucky Common to its year-round lineup, while also debuting a portfolio-wide packaging update at that time to unify the growing family of beers.
