Voice of San Diego, a nonprofit local news outlet, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the release of a commemorative beer, brewed by Chula Vista-based 3 Punk Ales Brewing Co. The limited-edition pale Mexican-style lager marks two decades of delivering independent, investigative journalism for a better San Diego.

Founded in 2005, Voice of San Diego has remained steadfast in delivering investigative reporting that holds powerful institutions accountable. The organization’s public service journalism prioritizes education, environmental concerns, housing affordability, regional growth, and local governance issues that directly affect San Diegans’ lives. The nation’s first nonprofit, digital-only media organization serving a local community, Voice of San Diego is regarded as a pioneer in the nonprofit news industry for building a sustainable business model based on the support of more than 35,000 readers, individual members, sponsors, and local and national foundations.

“When we launched Voice of San Diego, we quickly started making an impact and creating community; people in power who found our work threatening tried to reassure themselves it wouldn’t last,” said Scott Lewis, CEO and editor-in-chief of Voice of San Diego. “We knew there was only one option: work relentlessly through good years and bad, and always be of service to San Diegans. Reaching 20 years makes it clear – we’ve built an institution that is here to stay and more dedicated than ever to helping people understand their government, the forces shaping San Diego’s quality of life, and the tools to be a part of it.”

Voice of San Diego 20th Anniversary Lager features a Mexican-style Lager yeast strain and grain from the Pacific Northwest, delivering a crisp, refreshing flavor profile at 5% ABV and mellow bitterness under 50 IBUs.

“We are all loyal Voice of San Diego readers, who respect their South Bay reporting and love partnering with them on our own Emo Brown Podcast,” said Steve Garcia, co-founder of 3 Punk Ales Brewing Co. “They are a staple in the community when it comes to journalism. As a young brand ourselves, celebrating milestones like this are important to us, and we’re really excited about the opportunity to work with Voice on their 20th anniversary beer.”

Lewis noted the parallels between 3 Punk Ales and VOSD: “Like Voice, 3 Punk Ales had its doubters. But its leaders and the Emo Brown Foundation knew there was only one solution to survive and thrive: build a community, one person after another. It’s a partnership we’ve loved developing, and I’m honored they brewed us a beer to celebrate. ¡Que viva San Diego, South Bay y el periodismo!

During a launch party on Thursday, April 24, from 5-6 p.m. at 3 Punk Ales Brewing Co. in Chula Vista, attendees will have an opportunity to be one of the first to try the special release lager, while meeting Voice of San Diego reporters and staff.

Following the event, Voice of San Diego 20th Anniversary Lager will be available in 16-ounce cans and on draft at 3 Punk Ales Brewing Co. locations throughout San Diego County while supplies last.
