Original 40 Releases People’s Crown Bavarian-Style Pilsner

The Original 40 Brewing Company has released People’s Crown, a Bavarian-style pilsner, at its North Park brewpub. Head Brewer Kyle Fjalstad made the announcement.

People’s Crown is 5.1 percent alcohol-by-volume (ABV) with delicate herbal and floral notes on the finish. It’s a crisp, drinkable light lager with medium bitterness. The beer is available on draft and in four packs of 16-oz cans.

“We’ve got summertime weather in San Diego and this refreshing beer should quench the thirst of our neighbors and visitors who stroll through the craft beer mecca of North Park,” Fjalstad said. “You can’t go wrong pairing a Bavarian People’s Crown with our freshly baked Giant Bavarian Pretzel.”

Original 40’s “On the Lighter Side” tap list now includes three options: People’s Crown, Chrispy Boi Helles Lager, and Baja Soul Mexican Lager.

“Bavarian pilsners are very pale in color and characterized by their low ester production – due to the lower fermentation temperature – and a very light sulfuric taste,” Fjalstad said. “That, coupled with Tettnang and Perle hops, which are found in the southern parts of Germany, create a light lager with subtle floral notes that is extremely crisp and refreshing.”

Original 40 opens at noon Monday–Friday and at 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The brewpub, which opened in 2019 and is named after the original 40-acre parcel of land that became modern day North Park, is located at 3117 University Avenue.

Happy hour with $5 select beers is Monday – Friday from 4-6 p.m., as well as a late-night version on Tuesdays from 9-11 p.m.
