On Saturday, March 4, 2023 Urban Artifact will host a women’s led entrepreneur fair featuring over 50 different woman-owned businesses, artists, and restaurateurs.
Two brand new beers will be tapped with a portion of the proceeds going towards a scholarship at the Cincinnati State Brewing Science program for a women brewer. These beers are named after the women in the beer industry that have come before us. Urban Artifact’s beer “Suzy & Jane” is named after the co-owners of New Albion Brewing Company, the very first craft brewery, which often mistakenly has sole credit given to Jack McAuliffe.
The women leaders and brewers at Urban Artifact and Yellow Springs Brewery have teamed up to celebrate International Women’s Day: by honoring the women brewers that came before us, celebrating the women leaders of today, and helping pave the way for future women in the industry.
“It’s important for people to understand who modern craft beer comes from,” explains Urban Artifact’s lead brewer Hannah Kent. “The brewing industry wouldn’t exist without women, and that the icons of modern craft beer history are more than a bunch of crusty old dudes.”
Yellow Springs Brewery’s beer is aptly called “Haiku to Ninkasi” Ninkasi is the goddess of brewing and beer, the original deity responsible for bringing beer into existence. The history of beer and brewing has long been the responsibility of women, until the industrial revolution took that away.Both new drinks will be on tap and available at the Yellow Springs Brewery and at the Urban Artifact Women’s Day Celebration & Fair on March 4th.
A portion of all sales will be donated to the Cincinnati State Brewing Science program to help defray the costs of education for a future woman brewer.Hannah Kent continues, “We thought it not only important to honor the women that came before us, but to also help the next generation gain a foothold in the brewing industry. There is something for everyone in beer. The more diverse the voices become, the better the brewing industry will be as a whole. And better beer too!”
