Like many Americans, we at Brewery Ommegang were dismayed – if not entirely shocked – to learn of the decision last week to pull out of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Along with so many other things, it seems to us to be the latest sign of the coming apocalypse.
Not being ones to sit idly by, to commemorate these tumultuous times, we have decided to release from our cellars a limited quantity of Gnomegeddon, a beer we’ve released before but which has never seemed more appropriate than it does now.
For every bottle of Gnomegeddon we sell between now and the end of the year, we’ll donate a dollar to The Nature Conservancy, an organization that, like ourselves, has long supported efforts to conserve the lands and waters on which lives and livelihoods depend. In our case, as a brewery nestled in the idyllic hills of Cooperstown, NY, we are blessed to be surrounded by breathtaking natural surroundings and the Susquehanna River in particular, which serves as the lifeblood of what we do for a living.
A Belgian-style Blonde Ale fermented with Brettanomyces yeast that refuses to be contained or controlled, even by the very brewmasters who brought it into this world, Gnomegeddon is a fiendishly unpredictable beer for fiendishly unpredictable times. At 9.5% ABV, it pours a light orange color with slight haziness and a firm white head. Aromas of tropical fruit, sweet cherry, and a hint of cinnamon are followed flavors of ripe fruit, sweet malt, and light caramel. Medium bodied and incredibly smooth, Gnomegeddon pairs well with roasted fish or chicken, glazed ham, and strong cheeses… or whatever you plan to serve at the End of Days.
