Adding Automation on Small Brewing System for New Charlotte Beer Garden

D9 Brewing Company wanted a semi-automated system to produce a consistent product and allow for controlled experimentation of new recipes without breaking the bank when creating their new outdoor brewery and beer garden in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina.

Partnering with Burkert Fluid Control Systems, the team working on the project came up with a skid that eliminates some of the most frustrating challenges that an entirely manual system experiences, but at an affordable level in a compact footprint.

“D9 Brewing — The Pavilion at Uptown represents an entirely new and immersive way for our supporters to experience the innovative ale they consistently enjoy from D9 Brewing, tailored specifically for the Uptown community,” said D9 Brewing CEO and founder Andrew Durstewitz.

The entire brewing process will be visible through roll-up glass doors. Half of the beers on tap will be ones D9 customers know and love like Swell Rider Tangerine Session IPA (5.1% ABV) and Brown Sugar Brown Cow Mocha Brown Ale (6.9% ABV), while the other half will be exclusives brewed specifically for this Uptown location.

“What really sets this brewery apart from many others that already exist are the pneumatic control valves, automatic water blending, and touch screen control that we added. It’s a traditional 2-vessel brewery with manual control valves at the start, but after listening to some of the pain points that D9 wanted to eliminate, we engineered some additional automation into the system using our valves and controllers,” shared Aaron Wilder, Engineer at Burkert USA.

“The control system that the off-the-shelf version of this brewery uses is much more rudimentary compared to the Burkert system. Primarily because it doesn’t have any automatic control valves, either electric or pneumatic. They’re all manual, which involves a considerable number of small frustrating adjustments to get the inlet water temperature just right for strike water or sparge water. Overall, it would have been harder for the D9 brewing team to create a consistent product and we wanted to help however we could.”
